Where do violent people come From

Many people who receive legal or official sanction are simply regarded as bad people.  The Paill Spectrum model suggests that they may be suffering from a treatable behavioural disorder.  Symptoms and Signs of Paill Spectrum include chronic fatigue, tiredness, sleepy, memory loss, jitters and panics, anxiety attacks, dizziness or loss of balance, aches and pains such as sore elbows, sore chest, abdominal pain, sore backs of knees, sore Achilles tendons, sore and stiff hands.  These are associated with abnormal behavior in the Paill Spectrum model.

The most common behaviour bringing legal attention is rage or anger. Road Rage is probably the most well known example, but angry outbursts in supermarket carparks or checkouts are other obvious examples of the same behaviour. Many of these victims will often earn prison terms for their behaviour. However, it may be the good food and warm rooms that are responsible for their "improvement." When discharged from prison, a return to bad nutritional habits, can have disastrous consequences.

The most serious effects of the Paill Spectrum organism relate to its behavioural effects.

• The “arguing” teenager may not just be a problem of growing up.
• Domestic Violence and domestic fights may not be simply due to the bad behaviour or poor coping skills of the people involved.
• People who exhibit unusual and harmful judgement in terms of gambling, adultery, theft, criminal acts may have an underlying treatable reason for their behaviour.

Paill Spectrum causes patients to have excessive inappropriate reactions to minor irritations, such as at work.  People often say “What is wrong with him / her?”, without expecting an answer.

There is an example of one case where a young man had destroyed his sister's kitchen due to a minor disagreement about putting away teacups. Only the fact that his sister was concerned about his welfare stopped the police from being involved and from the young man being charged. After interviewing the young man, their doctor stressed to the family the importance of keeping the young man out of trouble until his treatment had "kicked in", over the next two weeks. The doctor felt the young man was teetering on then edge of extreme criminal violence, an accident waiting to happen. Since the young man started treatment, he has not lost his temper and has managed to return to work. At work, where only his boss's tolerance at first had kept him out of trouble, he has almost become a model employee again. In the following months, he even successfully returned to a course of study, with good success. His family helped a lot in supervising his medications especially in the early stages when his memory was so bad, but they have become very pleased with his progress. Back to Where do Violent top

Symptoms of Paill Spectrum
Besides Violence, Anger & Irritability:

Other Common Associated Symptoms are:

• Memory loss: a common presentation of this is difficulty in remembering phone numbers.  Some become lost in shopping centres, with which they should be familiar.
• Jitters and panics: brief attacks, often only lasting for seconds before disappearing completely.

• The behavioural disturbances are most prominent in people who have naturally “assertive” personalities on the Enneagram Personality Model.

  In people who are naturally more sedate or cooperative, only “small” bursts of irritable behaviour may be found.  People who previously functioned at a high level, progressively and more frequently begin to make poor choices or judgements.  Again, memory loss as well as jitters and panics may feature.

Are there any other symptoms that can help me
to recognise an affected person?

• Violence, Anger & Irritability
• Impulsive, aggressive, and aggressive behaviours
  are characteristic and will be readily identified by family members.  Unusual intense mood changes occur, often triggered by minor events.
  
  The patients are as inclined to attack family members as strangers, so it is likely families will report the behaviour in the long term, if they expect that something can be done about the behaviour. Affected people will “attack” friends quickly and will revert to normal treatment of friends just as easily. They will pick fights with allies and friends even under critical circumstances, when most people would consider getting out of trouble first, then argue later. They seem to have lost the ability to see the big picture.

Some Less Common but also Distinctive Features include
Symptoms such as:

• Narrow-mindedness:  For example, if you are in a room alone with someone for half an hour and speak to them, they turn towards you and ask: Are you talking to me?  The behaviour often appears to be like a form of exasperating “stupidity” to people around them. 
  
  This is a follow up on my previous letter on the Paill Spectrum syndrome, focusing on its relevance to “case finding” of people who may be prone to violent or aggressive behaviour.  The Paill Spectrum disease model pioneered by Dr. Andrew Xxxxx states that the syndrome can be diagnosed by a simple blood test and is caused by an infectious organism.  The symptoms of Paill Spectrum are common, so “prospective” case finding needs to focus on the special characteristics of affected people.  
  
  These people often display lack of judgement or narrow mindedness, which will increase the likelihood of their involvement in criminal activities.  They will often go along with others, as they are genuinely unaware of the non-immediate consequences of their actions.

•  They are often easily distracted and forget easily.  :-#
  
  They may engage in criminal activities and may often show irritability, poor judgement, poor memory, easy distractibility, and impulsiveness.  They may often commit violence against their families, forget this and are then surprised when the families are understandably careful in dealing with them again.

• These patients may develop strange and intense ideas. 
  People around them say” I can’t understand why he/ she did that?”

These ideas reflect the predominant culture / thoughts of the individuals. 
For example, if the environment of the person focuses on hatred of other people,
they are much more likely than “normal” people to act on the impulses.  

Other Symptoms of the Paill Spectrum Syndrome:

• Easy bruising: usually seen as “dot” or fingertip bruises on the upper arms and legs.
• They sleep a lot
• Memory is poor: phone number recall testing reveals problems.  They may become lost easily e.g. in shopping centres. I.e. In this example, they lose their sense of direction and their memory of where they have been.
• Concentration poor
• Dyslexia: especially in those affected since childhood

• Often tell you things you ask for, even when they should be more cautious in replying to the question.  People looking at them ask, “How can they be so stupid?”
• Clumsy, Dizzy, deteriorating balance: They may fail a drunkenness test and be unable to walk a straight line. 
• They may often show spontaneous hyperexcitability with good news: e.g. jumping up and down over a happy event rather than indicating happiness in a more restrained fashion. Back to Where do Violent top

The Paill Spectrum disease model as pioneered by Dr. Andrew Xxxxx, suggests that the syndrome is caused by an infectious organism and is contagious. 

Often the caretakers of these people, begin to show some of the same behavioural quirks as their charges.  Once a person has been affected for a long time, the only option may be long-term re-education out of the culture that developed their behaviour.  Strange as it may seem, locking someone in a room long- term with a TV set and non-violent TV programming, along with good basic nutrition, can cause substantial improvement in target behaviours.

There are other presentations of the Paill Spectrum Syndrome at other age groups.  There are some examples on the website and more on the Paill Spectrum CDs.  In every case, there are symptoms of the Paill Spectrum Syndrome present.  A simple blood test will confirm the presence of the Paill Spectrum Syndrome.
