Treatment of Behavioural & Other Disorders
The Paill Spectrum syndrome has a number of presentations: both symptoms and medical syndromes that currently have no known cause. Conditions where Paill Spectrum may play a role include: autism, Aspergers, anxiety, depression, and psychosis. In the Paill Spectrum model, the treatment for all these conditions is identical since the same underlying cause / underlying pathogenic mechanism exists. Treatment focuses on controlling risk factors such as wheat allergy, vitamin deficiency especially of B12 or folic acid, mineral deficiency such as zinc.

What Can I do to Help Them? (I’m not really a close friend or family member).
Basic Treatment is Over the Counter :-/
The condition is not hard to treat, just slow to treat.
- Multivitamins e.g. Centrum 50+: One daily
- There are some simple basic and often quite effective things that can be suggested to the person. The person should regularly and long-term take a good broad spectrum multivitamin (with a minimum RDI or Recommended Daily Intake) of ingredients. A person taking vitamins often feels better within a couple of months.
Also long-term, "more goes right with time and less goes wrong"
for the person with time if they are taking multivitamins.
- The reason for this, is that in our western society low grade or borderline deficiency states are common. A problem with a vitamin or nutritional problem is much more likely to grow into a big problem, than if there are no nutritional issues attached. And yes, the average person in our society may only need two or three vitamins / minerals out of their pill and will urinate out the rest. This vitamin need will vary from meal to meal and is very difficult and slow to assess from blood vitamin assays. It’s just easier to take a reasonable dose pill and let your body sort out the fine details. The body can also get by with lower levels of some vitamins, but may often work better with higher levels of some vitamins. Multivitamins are a gradual way to allow the body to increase its reserves for time of need. Back to Treatment top
- Gluten Free Diet: If Appropriate, Useful for even mildly allergic patients
- About 1 in 3 patients, (who have a gluten allergy, but not severe enough to be diagnosed as Celiac Disease) will have a dramatic response to treatment with a gluten free diet alone.
- Moods can change, tiredness will improve, balance and short sharp chest pains will normalize. Not only can the affected person see it, but their relatives, partners and close acquaintances will see the behavioural changes as well.
- Zinc 22 mg elemental:
- A maximum of three months at 50 mg daily is a low-risk general guideline.
- Alternatively, use one daily for six months
- A blood test should be used to guide treatment after this time frame / dose. One bottle of two hundred pills is generally safe enough without risking zinc overload.
- Aim for a level of zinc in the mid to upper reference range at the completion of treatment.
(Zinc is the icing on the cake. Don’t get too worried about it early).
- Take elemental zinc daily with Food. Zinc absorption is poor and low grade or borderline deficiency states are common. Dr. Pluta recommends that a blood test be done at least annually on persons on zinc therapy.
- Zinc levels may only rise slightly with this treatment regime. This is because the bioavailability of zinc from tablets is of the order of ten to twenty percent. Dr. Pluta gives this advice as a basic starting point for zinc therapy, which has the least chance of allowing excessive dosing to any person taking unsupervised medication. Higher doses may be suggested by a doctor, but this type of advice needs to take into account blood test results and the patients’ clinical circumstances.
It takes months for this therapy regime to bring results. Back to Treatment top
- This gets difficult. Many people just don't like taking tablets of any kind. Dr. Pluta suggests only starting this treatment with patients who are willing to do what the doctor tells them. Many patients complain that taking these supplements is more akin to eating food than to taking medicine. Only suggest this if you know the persons attitudes to medications and supplements.
- Take Omega 3 Oils (Fish Oil, not necessarily Cod Liver Oil) as well as Omega 6 Oils (Evening Primrose) daily. A good minimum dose, Dr. Pluta states, is two of each daily. If the person is willing, use two of each twice a day. This therapy regime can take up to a year to give some results. Results will often be most noticeable after a long course of treatment, when the first patch of warmer weather arrives.
- An important distinction to make here is microclimate. If you spend all your time indoors, the climate outside is more likely to be irrelevant to the progress of the treatment of your Paill Spectrum illness. Back to Treatment top

Paill Spectrum treatment comes as a package deal. All of the types of nutritional and antibiotic therapy are critical to the long-term treatment success. Bizarre events may occur with treatment, though predominantly with second line therapies. The therapies promoted on this web site are freely promoted because they are the safest first line treatments that can change the course of the Paill Spectrum illness. Dr. Pluta regards these as potential signposts on the road to recovery, not as reasons to abandon treatment. The key with the Paill Spectrum model is knowing what to expect and why. The model predicts these events well in Dr. Pluta's experience.
This page is intended as a basic introduction to treatment. There are many other intricacies of treatment. Many patients respond very well indeed to simple treatment regimes. Others require complicated therapies. Back to Treatment top

The Paill Spectrum model of disease may be relevant to treating a number of conditions such as chronic fatigue, learning difficulties, ADHD, obesity, psychosis, depression, Aspergers. Blood tests can be done to confirm risk factors such as wheat allergy, zinc deficiency, need for nutritional advice.
